After graduating from Columbia University in New York, Meshach Cober MD, FACS went on to study medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and obtained his medical degree in 2011. He then completed a residency in general surgery at York Hospital in Pennsylvania. He has practiced general surgery and endoscopy in Maryland and Florida.
Meshach is married to Betsy Cober RN, BSN who did her studies and training at York College in Pennsylvania. She has worked at multiple skilled nursing facilities and served as a nurse manager.
Together, Betsy and Meshach have started Cober Hernia to pursue their dream of trying to help people obtain their best health in an efficient and easy manner. The Cobers' interests involve spending time together as a family, serving in the local church, and being active outdoors.
Our goal is not to rush through as many patients as possible, nor is it our goal to make patients life-long "customers." Rather, we wish to equip people to live healthy and joyful lives and to help them when unavoidable health concerns do arise.
We have a "less is more" approach when possible and we believe that patients with inguinal hernias should have access to a focused surgeon who specializes in groin hernias and who offers the full gamut of repairs from mesh approaches to non-mesh, tissue-based repairs.
Meshach always did very well in school and his mother had planted the seeds in him that he ought to be a doctor to help people. He was always drawn to health sciences and was a volunteer EMT-B in college. He went on to pursue a medical degree and was drawn to general surgery and the variety of medical and surgical problems he would be able to treat.
Meanwhile in the Keystone State, Betsy was pursuing her nursing degree and went on to be nurse manager and was drawn to nursing and business to have a greater impact. Betsy and Meshach met and were married in 2016 at the Church of the Open Door in York, PA. Shortly thereafter Meshach's hair, which was stubbornly holding on until he "sealed the deal," finally breathed a sigh of relief and quickly went away 😄.
Together Betsy and Meshach lived and raised a son and daughter starting in Maryland and later moving to Florida in 2018. Meshach worked for hospital corporations and performed, in addition to hernia surgery, a wide spectrum of GI and general surgery. Happily, Meshach had obtained excellent training in open and laparoscopic hernia techniques in York, PA, and added robotic repairs to his armamentarium when the robot came to his hospitals.
In 2023, Meshach and Betsy felt that the demands of the corporate hospital work environment were limiting his ability to focus on hernias and offer underutilized techniques. Meshach undertook additional study and training as he felt that the state of hernia care was suboptimal. In 2024, the Cobers prepared for the launch of Cober Hernia, a hernia-focused specialty practice with personalized and convenient care. Meshach left the corporate hospital setting in early 2025 and since has been exclusively aiming to provide the highest level of hernia care to our patients.
We see it as our purpose to give patients all the options and the access to the best surgical techniques beforehand which were not offered locally. We also are invested in the total health of our patients and hope that we can bless all of our patients with care and friendship in their health journey.
